Thur/ Feb. 28 - Death by Alcohol: the Sam Spady Story

Our guest today was Butler instructor, Heidi Davison, who also teaches Student Connect.

We viewed the powerful DVD, 'Death by Alcohol: the Sam Spady Story' and had a stimulating discussion following it. Some of the points to consider:

  • Media messages about alcohol vary between gender. Females are drawn to alcohol by myths perpetuated, such as that you won't put on as much weight drinking 'hard liquor', as they will for beer.
  • Someone in the film made the comment that it seemed like there is 'no middle ground' between the culture of drinking and the devout and religious. Could part of the solution be to help young people to see that having wide range of interests and activities (group, as well as individual and solitude) could help them to avoid overindulging on any one particular form of 'entertainment' (including drinking)?
  • Sobering to hear was the fact that 1400 campus death each year are attributed to alcohol
